The Garden at BR FLAIM's Mayflower campus has undergone a sizable transition. At the beginning of the school year, it was determined that the raised beds at the old garden site were beginning to rot and needed to move to another location on the property. A new location was chosen that would get the most sunlight, water, and space.
The new garden site is located at the back of the campus near the Fit America area and behind the cafeteria. East Baton Rouge Parish Schools secured a grant from the National Farm to School Network with a generous donation from the Walmart Foundation and partnered with Slow Food BR (SFBR) to implement. This allowed SFBR to purchase tools, a cultivator, a shed, and other garden supplies for the new site.
Through the combined work of parents, PTO, school staff and SFBR, FLAIM now has a thriving winter garden with new raised beds, graveled walking paths, a shed that has been built to house the garden equipment, and a cultivator to work the soil! The old garden space has been cleaned out and will become a new outdoor classroom. To view more photos, click here.
As the garden transitions from Fall and Winter crops, the students can look forward to the Spring season, and the veggies it will bring! SFBR plan is to plan a time for regular educational programming either in the classroom or as an after school activity. 2016 looks to be a bright new start for the Garden at BR FLAIM!
